Mind The Gap

1999.
Mixed Media Clamshell Box Construction: book board, book cloth, paper, ink, gouache, found objects
6.87 x 14.25 x 1 inches

A clamshell box is a particular form, traditionally used in libraries to protect, preserve, and store manuscripts of the past. I first made them to protect the books that I had constructed. Eventually I began to think about the clamshell box as a metaphor. I built them to contain my inner thoughts, memories, feelings, and ideas. Unlike the traditional form, however, I opened a side to frame an interior view.  Mind the Gap is a clamshell box that stands with two sides to be viewed.
