THE EDGE KNOWS; THE ROCK IS

January 16, 2025

I am pleased to announce the opening of our exhibit

THE EDGE KNOWS THE ROCK IS

At Hammerfriar Gallery on FEBRUARY 1st, 4 - 7

Featuring the artwork of

Brooke Holve & Catherine Richardson

Catherine and I have been collaborating now for several years traveling to Iceland and Ireland for residencies where we were both inspired by the raw and natural energies of the landscape. Our experiences at these residencies sparked many conversations throughout our collaboration. Conversations between us, between our work and about the actively changing landscapes around us. We observed and discussed the natural processes that shape a region, the unfinished nature of landscapes, and our unique practices of making, unmaking, remaking. Above all, we focused on process over immutable form. This exhibition reflects the essence of these ongoing conversations.

Mark your calendars and we hope to see you there!

Off to Iceland last September for a month long artist residency at Skaftfell Center for Visual Art, located on a fjord in the small fishing village of Seydisfjordur. My fifth visit to the island as there is something about the elemental shapes and energies that continue to draw me back to its natural wonders of volcanoes, rift zones and young landscapes visibly being reshaped.

I return to feel its energies and rhythms, to experience its vastness and to open me to possibilities and conversations with and of the landscape.

Conversations with, of and off:

Evidence of the landscape organizing itself—reshaping itself in human time. The eruption site of the Meradalir Volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula in August of 2022.

Two years ago in December of 2020, Seydisfjordur experienced an average year’s rainfall over a period of 10 days. Major landslides destroyed 13 buildings.

Now, two years later, evidence of the landslides remain.

A water process that shapes the landscape

During my stay, I experienced a red alert storm with winds up to 60 m per second. Evidence of the power of the winds (below); a historic pier house built around 1900 by a Norwegian entrepreneur was lost, collapsing on itself.

There’s no everything; everything is always moving as the landscape (natural and human—made) interacts with the natural processes of wind, water and soil.

Dissolving boundaries between art and nature; merging art and earth natural processes. Video by Brooke Holve & Eve Chartrand created during the artist residency at Skaftfell Center for Visual Art.

Skaftfell Center for Visual Art

back to iceland

August 21, 2022

After four years since my last visit to Iceland when I taught a workshop at Gullkistan Center For Creativity, I am off to Iceland again. This time I will visit the east coast for a month long residency at Skaftfell - Center for Visual Art located on a fjord in the small fishing village of Seydisfjordur. I am meeting up with Catherine Richardson to resume our collaboration on extraction that had culminated in the exhibit, Materiality Re_Mined at the Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley in 2021.

Excited to be returning to a land of volcanoes, rift zones and landscapes that in real time are visibly shaping. Look for my posts on my instagram feed (holvebrooke) and blog at www.brookeholve.com during the month of September.
